MONOTONY

CUERNAVACA, MEXICO, 2019

What does it mean losing your sense of hearing? Moreover what are the implications of not recognizing your own voice? What can you lose with it?

Hearing loss can affect a person in three main ways: physical, social and emotional. Regarding the obvious aspect, the physical, when hearing loss occurs one might feel disoriented, confused and lost while hearing the telephone, understanding when several people are talking, understanding TV or hearing someone talking. Furthermore, feelings of isolation, solitude and losing one’s identity might accompany this physical problems.

“Monotony” is an ongoing experimental audiovisual work which aims to explore the consequences (directly and indirectly) lose hearing. Deeply, hearing loss cuts one off from people, since we need to communicate every day with others. A lot of times the impact that hearing has, while interacting with others, is unrecognized. I strive to imagine what is happening in the mind of someone who cannot fully hear her environment. This project seeks to understand how she is coping with loss-hearing while trying to keep interacting with her family.
